Branches, weeds and tiles
A few rules to keep your garden neat and tidy:
- Regularly prune trees and plants to prevent branches from overhanging and bothering others or blocking sunlight.
- Keep grass short and remove weeds between the tiles.
- Damaged tiles must be replaced by the tenant.
- Don’t use the garden for storage, as a parking lot or to deposit waste.
Not all trees and plants are allowed
We strongly suggest you do not plant trees in your garden. Trees can grow to be very large and often grow faster than you would think. Conifers and pines are not allowed. When a tree has to be removed and has a diameter larger than 13 centimeters, a logging permit must be obtained from the municipality. You are not allowed to plant ivy or climbing hydrangea plants because they damage the façade.
Fences and hedges
You may create a boundry, a separation, between your garden and that of your neighbours or a common space. There are a few conditions though:
- Ask permission from your neighbours and lieven de Key.
- Fences should be of sturdy, safe and made of durable material.
- You and your neighbours are responsible for maintenance.
- Fences must comply with the building regulations for fences. Please check the building regulations or ask for information from the municipality.
Mind the boundaries
Trees should be at least one and a half meters removed from the property boundary and the façade of your home. They may not exceed a length of four meters. Shrubs and hedges should be at least a half a meter removed from the property boundary and may not be higher than two meters. Large shrubs may not be planted against the wall or façade: a path of at least one and a half meters should remain clear.
Facade and roof acces
The facade, the windows and the roof must remain accessible for maintenance. Keep this in mind when designing the garden.
