Here are some tips to prevent fires in the home:

  • Turn off electrical appliances when not in use, and do not leave them on stand-by.
  • Clean the filters in your clothes dryer.
  • Make sure that you leave enough space around (halogen) lighting.
  • When using an extension lead, make sure you unroll it completely.
  • Make sure that all the fuses in your fuse box are in good working order.
  • Make sure that the gas pipe supplying your gas cooker is in good condition.

You can find information about this on the fire department website.

Evacuating in the event of a fire

In the event of a house fire, there will also be smoke. This means that you will only have three minutes to get to safety before you are asphyxiated. Plan your escape route in advance for situations in which you need to leave the house quickly. Keep communal areas clean and free of clutter. Stairwells, hallways and other communal areas are designed to be used as escape routes. In an emergency situation, the emergency services also need to be able to access the building quickly.

Smoke detector

The sooner you are aware that there is a fire, the more time you will have to escape. Smoke detectors can save lives. For your safety and the legal obligation, a working smoke detector must be present. Regularly test whether your smoke detector still works. Is your smoke detector broken? Then report this to us.
